Labour condemn Tories 'secret manifesto for Wakefield'
|
Following Wakefield Tories much hyped, but poorly attended roadshow in Ossett, Labour have hit out at revelations that the Tories have a secret manifesto should they win next year's council elections. Tory-group leader Cllr. Mark Crowther revealed that he could not tell the meeting a single specific policy that he would be committed to if he became council leader. However he did reveal there were several policies that the Tories had discussed "behind the scenes".
Tony Richardson, Labour council Candidate for Ossett said: "It is clear that the Tories have a secret manifesto for Wakefield district. "We know that nationally Tory plans would mean big cuts to the frontline services that people rely on every day. We know that Tory Councils in other parts of the country are modelling their services on cut price airlines, slashing services levels and closing libraries. We have seen the results in Leeds with a 10 week bin strike fiasco. "The fact the Tories here won't submit their plans to public scrutiny suggests that they are planning similar things here and are afraid of what the public may think.
"However I was glad to hear Conservative councillors are supporting action to stimulate the economy and to get more uniformed officers on the beat. "Perhaps they could try having a word with David Cameron though, because these are the very policies that the Tories have opposed tooth and nail in Westminster."
